Mandatory Two-Week Quarantine Remains for Visitors Traveling to Florida from New York Tri-State Area

While many guests may have been delighted by the initial news that Walt Disney World would be reopening its parks and resorts starting from July 11th, the Florida Department of Health may jeopardize plans for some US travelers.

In a recent update, Governor DeSantis announced that all individuals entering the state of Florida from Connecticut, New Jersey and New York must isolate or quarantine themselves for a period of 14 days. This order, originally set to end on May 8th, has been extended through July 7th. Quarantine should be in effect from the time of entry into Florida or the duration of the individual’s presence in Florida, whichever is shorter (potentially rendering any visit of less than two weeks unnecessary).

Roadside checkpoints will be set up to screen for potential COVID-19 cases. The rule will not apply to students travelling for the purpose of academic work, internships, sports training and any other activity or program approved by their institution. All those isolating are responsible for their own costs associated with their quarantine.

If you live in the Tri-State Area and have been planning a trip to Walt Disney World within the coming month, we encourage you to check with your travel operator for advice, and ensure you are following local guidelines. Stay safe, readers!

  1. The numbers for the virus have continued to drop in the Tri State area. Why is this restriction being extended? But it’s okay to have sports teams and everyone else come there?

  2. Everybody talks about being data driven. I wish more would stick to it, the facts do not support this approach. For 6/6 NJ had a total of 426 new confirmed cases, but FL had 966. But let’s focus on NJ as a ‘feeder’ state. As a matter of fact the last day [according to stats from the state of NJ] that NJ was above 900 was 5/28, however since 6/1 FL has consistently been above 1k.

  3. While I’m not planning on traveling to Disney World for at least the next 5 months, this quarantine makes no sense. I live in New York where the positive testing rate is now between 1%-2% and on the downslide. Florida’s positive rate is now at a near all-time high. If anything, we should be quarantining DeSantis if he wants to visit New York.

  4. Wow! That really seems a tad unfair given that the region is some of the biggest visitors within the nation!

  5. The Governor’s EO ends on July 11, so that means the restrictions are also removed, meaning that after the expiration, the quarantine is over.

    • No, it looks like the tri-state area = NY, NJ, CT.
In any case, it looks like the restrictions would apply only until the quarantine lasts, and that would be mid-July. May not apply to end of August, unless they extend the quarantine

  6. How will they know if someone quarantines or not? Do they have to have something from the health department or what?

  7. This needs to stop. NY cases are declining when Florida’s are rising. I’m sick of being discriminated against for being from CT. He better lift this before my August trip.

    • I’m very worried now I’m also going on August. I was originally going Easter week just rebooked for August and didn’t even know about this. How will they know if we go out I don’t get it

  8. makes no sense..The New York tri state area has far fewer new cases than Florida and many other states at this point. The New York tri state area will be done with this long before most of the country. Us Floridians are a greater threat the the people from the Northeast than they are to us.

  9. So i live in mass but the closest airport is in Hartford does this count? Probably a stupid question

  10. Now lets get this right….know one from the tri-states area can come to Florida without a 14 day quarantine….But they are allowing flights from Europe and those people don’t need to be?

  11. We live halfway between Buffalo and Erie, PA, nearly an 8 hour drive from the “Tri-State” area. We are DVC members, annual passholders as well as Tables in Wonderland. We know many families from our area that are not only DVC members but also have reservations in June and early July that were not told they can’t go. What are they gonna do when they get to Orlando only to find out they can’t quarantine on Disney grounds? Fortunately, our next reservation is at the end of October. I just find it strange that Florida would include all of New York State in this Executive Order. We are only 45 minutes from Erie, PA and they don’t have to quarantine in FL. We only had 77 confirmed cases and 4 deaths total in our county. So lets punish everyone.

    • Just spoke with member services on Saturday – heard nothing about this. We are set to arrive on 6/22 from NJ. I specifically asked about the 2 week quarantine period. CM was not sure. CM got a supervisor who said not to worry about it – don’t cancel the reservation. Now I see this quarantine order is extended until July – am I supposed to travel all the way down there from NJ and get turned away? What the heck???

      • Hey what did you find out?
My friend just went there and they just had to fill out a form when they got off plane

        • Do you know what the form asked. We are scheduled to be in FL 6/27 and feeling a little unsure on what’s going to happen

        • Were they going to Disney? It says on Disney’s website that people from those areas “must not enter” the resorts. We’re from NY and cannot cancel our reservation but also do not want to be arrested!

    • I’m southeast of Syracuse. I’ve been saying this from day one about the ‘tristate’ area. Apparently the Florida Governor is considering all of NY, NJ and CT the Tristate area. We know the tristate area as the NYC area and its surrounding areas. NY numbers are well below the numbers of Florida and many other states right now. The seven day average rate over the last week has been well below many others. This is absolutely ridiculous at this point. DeSantis lifted Louisiana’s quarantine last Friday. Hopefully this will happen for the tristate area real soon. I’m not changing my plans for July.

      • I hope your right that he lifts it soon. I go in August and I’m not cancelling either but would like to know if someone went down there from nyc recently and if the called them and went to there house to see if they are really staying in the entire vacation it’s just insane we will wear masks we shouldn’t have to stay in

        • we just returned. there is no way to enforce – don’t be lame. The Alabama & other non I95 entry points remove the check point.

  12. Stupid rule since FL numbers have been going up on covid cases all by themselves. Its impossible to control who’s there and who’s not

  13. Thanks governor DeSantis. Everyone knows your forced quarantine for 3 States is about nothing but money. Your theme parks generate most of your income. It’s the one way you can keep the crowds low as they get backup and running.. I hear there may be a soft opening at Disney world. Many may not understand that means they will open the park’s early to certain groups of people. That would be Florida residents, DVC members, and annual pass holders. I qualify for to. Since you have that nice little quarren seen, I can’t come, if it happens. This is about nothing but but money. You tried to blame the kids for Spring break, but it was all Au in the government that wanted to make the money. You got nailed.. This is such a joke karma and no one sees it.. Right when Disney figures it can handle the crowds and is ready for some more money, you will decide it’s safe to have all of us come back. I can guarantee it! Meanwhile, I’m going to spend 3 weeks in Montana. Enjoy!

  14. Lol this is laughable. How is anyone going to enforce that?! Quarantine a plane coming from JFK?! Keep tabs on you when you land if you rent a car, drive to a hotel, go stay at your second home, etc. ? There is no way that will work and people who believe it are really a sad kind. There is not enough man power to enforce that. What if you drive in? Is Disney going to ask me when I crossed the border into Florida?! So for a trip to Disney- id be expected to get a hotel for 2 weeks before being allowed into the park?! Lololol and we have 1% of 50k tests per day testing positive in NY. I can’t even take this seriously lol

  15. The State ruling expires July 7th! The Parks do NOT reopen until July 11th so unless the FL Governor extends this rule another month, it’s a moot point!

    • The Executive Order the article and some of the comments are referring to was unfortunately extended in Section 3 of the new order—Executive Order 20-139.
I spoke with the Florida Health Dept. yesterday for clarification since we live in upstate NY, are DVC members and have a reservation in July.

The representative there said that July 7th, 2020, WAS the expiration date of the older order but now because the order was extended in the new Exec Order 20-139, there is no expiration date now.
It’s extended until the governor decides otherwise. If you go to floridahealthcovid19.gov/travelers/, you’ll see the update there.
I also called the governor’s office and got the same answer re: no expiration now.

We’re nowhere here near the Tri-State Area, i.e. NYC and its surrounding areas. Regardless, both the health dept. and governor’s office said that the order applied to ALL of NY, NJ and Conn.
I’d love to know if someone else has contacted both or either and received a similar response.

      • I called governors office and staffer told me she cannot interpret the tri state area comment. She told me to email his office. If you google it it says NYC region. This is absurd. We are going in August. Wish us both luck

  16. Two of the smartest things I’ve done is 1) walking past every DVC kiosk and 2) declined to renew our annual passes in January. Neither was pandemic related of course but this makes me extra glad that I did both. I’m also super glad that we’ve got Governor Murphy instead of DeSantis. Good luck with that Florida.

  17. does anyone actually know of anyone coming from the tri-state area breaking the quarantine sentence

  18. I can’t find an end date (July 7 ) anywhere except in this article. The actual order doesn’t have an end date on it, that I can see. Anyone know where this is stated? Supposed to head down there on July 9….

  19. With Junior Olympics coming to Florida in July-August will they cancel the Tri-state quarantine requirement ?

    • I don’t know if this applys but this is found under the new Exec Order, “Executive Order does not apply to individuals involved in commercial activity and students traveling for the purpose of academic work, internships, sports training and any other activity or program approved by the educational institution.”

  20. We purchased a condo in FL in March, virtually, we’re now having it remodeled while we sell our NJ home and can’t even take a quick trip to take care of business since we have no place to stay. I supported DeSantis through the worst of this, now we are just being singled out, which doesn’t make others who live in our building very welcoming.

  21. I have a mid august DCL followed by 5 days in Disney and I’m a NJ resident. Is it even legal for him to mandate this? How am I supposed to fly in for my cruise? I’ve spent 2 years saving for my honeymoon and if this man ruins it I will be livid. Anyone know of someone I can contact about this because our lates are so so so much lower here than NJ because we have common sense up here. I know very few people under the age of 70 in Florida who are wearing masks and most of them laugh when I tell them we have to wear masks up here.

  22. I’m supposed to be flying into West Palm Beach the beginning of August. This BETTER and I live in upstate NY where we are entering phase 3 tomorrow. So I don’t get this. I just don’t understand. And it better be lifted july 7th and not be extended again.

  23. Edit to my previous post….this BETTER be lifted by the beginning of August. This is just nuts. Our numbers are going down every single day, and I NEED this vacation!

  24. I booked my tickets to Orlando Florida from July 17 through the 21st coming from New York what is going on with this quarantine will this end by July 7 Disney world and Theme parks are going to open up New York cases are low Florida cases are Much high we should be doing quarantine in New York for people that come from Florida!

  25. No problem since Ny State will soon require anyone arriving from Florida to self-isolate quarantine for 14 days.
    Go figure1
