Mayor Demings recipient of the African American Chamber’s 2021 MLK Humanitarian of the Year Award

The African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida (AACCCF) selected Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings as the recipient of its 2021 MLK Humanitarian of the Year Award. The award was presented in memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to commemorate his belief that progress is achieved through cooperation, compassion, and understanding.

“Mayor Demings has done an incredible job leading the County and the community through the COVID-19 pandemic, plus he created the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Initiative, which says a lot about what he wants to accomplish,” said Tanisha Nunn Gary, President, African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida. “Every day, he wants us to celebrate and perpetuate what Dr. King stood for, which will ultimately make our community stronger.”

Winners of various categories were announced at the AACCCF’s 17th Annual Eagle Awards Gala on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 6 p.m. during a virtual awards ceremony. The Eagle Awards is the African American Chamber’s most prestigious event, and it showcases those who share the Chamber’s commitment to the growth and advancement of Black-owned businesses, while also embracing diversity and inclusion.

“When we see individuals like the Mayor doing good work, it deserves to be acknowledged,” asserted Gary. “Whether making PPEs and grants accessible to residents, or ensuring that residents and businesses come through this pandemic whole, the Mayor has shown true leadership and understanding. This is a man who doesn’t do what he does for political reasons; he has a caring heart.”
