Step by step, Central Florida is trying to increase its inventory of affordable housing units.Wednesday a major theme park giant announced its plans to help.Walt Disney World is bringing new affordable housing units to southwest Orange County to be located near transportation, shops and other residential areas."We're excited to share that we're that we're earmarking 80 acres of our land to create a new affordable housing development right here in Central Florida,” Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort, said.The development will be located near the expanding Flamingo Crossings retail and dining complex and Disney's theme parks.Walt Disney World released a rendering of the proposed project.Disney says the development will offer residents a variety of home choices that are affordable and attainable.“And we plan to work with a developer to bring this initiative to life using the creativity and innovation that Disney is known for,” Vahle said.There is a severe shortage of affordable housing all across the country, so plans to build more than 1,300 units is welcome news."I am very excited that Walt Disney World is stepping up to the plate to help set the standard for corporate engagement in this community by building workforce housing. This something we certainly know is a dire need in this community,” Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said.Demings looks forward to working with other businesses to do the same.In fact, Universal Orlando had already stepped up to the plate.In partnership with the Orange County Housing for All task force, the theme park company donated 20 acres of land to build up to 1,000 affordable housing units with its Housing for Tomorrow Initiative.Disney says its project is still in the early planning stages.There's no timeline to share right now, but WESH 2 News is told this is a multi-year project.More details about Disney’s affordable housing community will be released at a later date.
